Preparing a Concrete Base for a Timber Building

A solid, level concrete base is essential for all our fixed timber buildings, including stables, garages, garden rooms, workshops and sheds. A correctly prepared base provides stability, prevents movement and helps ensure your timber building will last for many years.

Mobile stables and mobile field shelters do not require a concrete base. However, they must initially be constructed by our installation team on a firm, flat and level surface.

The Concrete Base Preparation Process

1. Mark Out the Ground

The area is marked out using pegs and string, following the dimensions provided in the building's base plan. Measurements are checked to ensure the corners are square.

2. Excavate and Install Shuttering

The ground is excavated to approximately 200–250mm, depending on ground conditions. Timber shuttering is then installed around the perimeter, ensuring the finished base will be level.

3. Lay and Compact the Hardcore

Approximately 100mm of hardcore is spread across the excavated area and thoroughly compacted to provide a firm, stable foundation.

4. Install Damp-Proof Membrane and Steel Mesh

A damp-proof membrane is laid over the prepared hardcore, followed by steel reinforcing mesh supported on spacers to strengthen the concrete.

5. Pour and Level the Concrete

Concrete is poured to the required thickness, typically at least 100mm or more, 150mm for larger buildings. It is then tamped and levelled to create a smooth, even surface. Sufficient curing time is allowed.

6. Lay a Single Course of Bricks

Once the concrete has cured, a single level course of suitable bricks is laid to the exact footprint of the building. This is to raise the timber building above the concrete, helping protect against moisture.

Ready for Installation

Your concrete base must be correctly sized, level and fully prepared before our installation team arrives.

Please note: This is a general overview of the process rather than detailed construction instructions. Base requirements vary depending on the building, ground conditions and intended use. Always follow the supplied base plan and seek advice from a qualified groundworks contractor where necessary.
